Odds for promoted sides narrowing
Published: 14/08/2008
Since the Premier League was formed 47 clubs have won promotion to the Premier League from the Championship and overall 24 times the clubs have survived which is slightly over 50% but over the last five seasons this figure goes down to 40% with only six of the 15 promoted sides surviving in the Premier League for a second season
There has only been one season when all three sides survived in the Premier League, this was back in 2001/02 when Fulham, Blackburn and Bolton all survived with Blackburn finishing highest in 10th place, and all three sides are still in the Premier League today .
There has only been one season when all three sides went straight back down again and that was back in 1997/98 when Bolton, Barnsley and Crystal Palace went down.
Best finish by a promoted side is third place, twice, by Newcastle United in 1993/94 and Nottingham Forest the following season.
In recent seasons only three sides have managed a to finish inside the Top 10, Reading were 8th in 2006/07, and West Ham and Manchester City both managed 9th place in their first seasons back.
Ipswich famously finished fifth in 200/01 just missing out on a Champions League place, they did qualify for the UEFA Cup for the following season but it all proved to much for them and they were relegated.
Crystal Palace have been promoted three times and each time they have been relegated straight back down
