How the eventual Champions started the Season

How the eventual Champions started the Season

In the 16 Premier League seasons the team that went onto be Champions have only ever lost twice and never at home and the last time was 13 seasons ago.

The first time it happened was back in the first Premier League season when Manchester United were defeated 2-1 at Bramhall Lane by Sheffield United thanks to two Brian Deane goals.

The other time it happened and it also involved United as they were beaten 3-1 at Villa Park a result which brought out the famous saying from Alan Hansen ‘you will win nothing with kids’ as Sir Alex Ferguson fielded a young side

On both occasions they went onto to win the league.

Last season United did not make the best of starts as they looked to defend their crown when they were held to a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford by Reading.

That draw ended a run of seven seasons when the team that went onto win the title were opening day winners.

The eventual champions have played a different team on each of the previous 16 Premier League opening day matches - no same side has been played against more than once by the eventual champions on the opening day of a Premier League season.
