Birmingham City’s match winner came in the 90th minute from summer signing Kevin Phillips who at 35 years and 15 days was the oldest scorer on the day, four years older than Preston North Ends Paul McKenna

 

There were just four players over the age of 30 to get on the scoresheet

 

The only teenager to get on the score sheet was Wolves Sam Vokes who scored in the away draw at Plymouth Albion aged 18 years 293 days, after Vokes David McGoldrick who scored Southampton’s equalizer at Ninian Park

 

Barnsley were the only side not to play a player under the age of 22 on the opening day of the season

 

Southampton fielded eight players under the age of 22 which was the most in the division, two more than Ipswich and newly promoted Nottingham Forest  

 

Wolves and Notts Forest had the youngest average of 24

 

Burnley used the most players over the age of 30 with seven, two more than Sheffield United

 

The biggest crowd was at Pride Park to see relegated Derby County lose 1-0 to newly promoted Doncaster Rovers, 33,010

 

The only crowd under 10,000 was at Blackpool where 8,244 turned up to watch them lose 1-0 to Bristol City
